Job Description

Required abilities, skills and knowledge: All Residential Workers must possess sound judgment, objectivity, maturity, effective communication skills, emotional stability, and positive role modeling skills to successfully provide care to four unrelated adult residents as identified in the home program statement. All staff must possess an acceptable driving record, and have or obtain a Wisconsin Drivers License, if required, for accepted position. All staff must be at least 18 years of age. Residential Workers are responsible for acquiring training that satisfies CBRF State requirements in the following areas:

Standard Precautions training – 3 hours: is required for all employees prior to any job responsibilities that may result in blood or body fluids exposure. Annual continuing education on Standard Precautions is required.

Medication Management – 8 hours: is required before staff may help residents with any medication.

Client related training to be completed within 6 months of employment must include: Client Specific Developmental Disability – 8 hours, Client Specific Mental Illness – 8 hours, Resident’s Rights – 8 hours, Individualized Service Plan – 8 hours, Assessment and annual evaluation, Dietary training – 4 hours.

Within 90 days of employment staff must complete Fire Safety – 6 hours, CPR, First Aid and Choking – 6 hours. CPR certification must be renewed every 2 years; First Aid and Choking certification must be renewed every 3 years.

A minimum of 15 hours approved community education classes related to health, safety and welfare of residents, resident’s rights, and treatment appropriate to residents must be completed annually beginning with the calendar year after the year in which the initial training is received.

The employee is responsible for obtaining documentation from a physician, a registered nurse or a physician’s assistant indicating that they have been screened for illness detrimental to residents, including tuberculosis. The documentation is to be completed within 90 prior to providing services. The TB test must be repeated and documented annually.

Position Responsibilities:

Requires employee scheduling flexibility and fulfilling scheduled shift responsibilities. Adult Family Homes operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. MYS employees will be scheduled as needed.

Requires working professionally with all MYS employees and supervisors, clients and their families and professionals from other agencies.

Learning Adult Family Home procedures, policies and guidelines whether in written or verbal form.

To accurately and informatively log daily activity involving client and house issues. Transfer pertinent client information into individual client case notes. Generate incident reports as appropriate. Each staff member is responsible for quality communication whether in written or verbal form.

To attain skills appropriate for developing Individualized Service Plans.

Work together with case manager, client, client’s family and MYS employees to develop a client specific care plan that will be most beneficial to client’s progress toward independent living.

Requires the ability to implement Individualized Service Plans.

Requires the ability to be consistent in implementation of the Individualized Service Plan along with household rules and regulations.

Requires being responsible for a caseload in conjunction with the supervisor. Client goals and progress reports are due monthly.

To make sound decisions and judgments according to the physical and emotional needs of the client in accordance with Adult Family Home policy, Individualized Service Plan and laws.

To learn and demonstrate knowledge of resident rights.

Requires staff to keep confidential all information pertaining to clients and their families.

To report any suspected client abuse immediately to acting supervisor.

Requires staff to assure client has received physical examination to identify health problems and is screened for communicable diseases including tuberculosis, within 90 days prior to admission to the home or within 7 days after admission. Following initial exam, ensure client will receive annual physical and TB test. In addition staff is required to seek immediate medical attention for clients should an illness or medical emergency arise between annual physical exams.

Requires staff to assure client receives routine dental care beginning as soon as possible.

Requires the ability to be objective when facilitating group discussion, participating in individual discussion/counseling, or defusing an emotionally charged situation.

Requires the ability to demonstrate positive and effective problem solving within the guidelines, routine and policy of the Adult Family Home.

Requires keeping the supervisor informed of developments, concerns or incidents that affect each client, his/her case, the home or the company.

Requires staff meeting attendance or being responsible for keeping informed via staff meeting notes. All staff is expected to participate in the further development of the Adult Family Home program.

Requires staff to participate in household duties, such as cleaning, meal planning, cooking, and light maintenance.

Requires staff to encourage and teach clients appropriate adult family living and social skills through modeling and conversation.

Requires staff to be creative and goal oriented in initiating client activity. Recognize and develop a plan to introduce clients to many new opportunities and learning experiences.

Requires the ability to knowledgably supervise the distribution of client medication, know possible side effects of prescribed medication and monitor client for possible side effects.

Requires staff to be awake at all times.

Requires that staff using own vehicle to transport clients, provide Marathon Youth Services, Inc. documentation of insurance liability coverage and documentation that the vehicle is in safe operating condition.
