Volume 2, Issue 9

Labor Day Weekend. Another national holiday is upon us, and marking the end of summer at that! Yikes! It seems to me that summer just got started, and here we are finishing up summer vacations and sending everyone back to school. While the summer was filled with lots of fun activities for the guys, it always seems to end to soon. Many good memories were born though. Including some new ones this past month.
Racing season has come to an end for another year also. Doug and the team had another very successful year, with lots of thrills and a few disappointments. Nothing, however, to dampen the overall success of the year.
While it’s been a quiet summer for placement activity, we are anticipating new challenges at this time of year, and look forward to meeting new boys and families. We also have some new initiatives in the works and will be reporting on them at a latter date. Stay tuned!

Racing Season Wrap-Up

August saw Josh successfully complete programming at RGH and earn discharge to his home. He had maintained our level 4, our highest level, for an extended period of time prior to his discharge on August 27th. A true graduate of our program, we are all very proud of him. Nice Job Josh! He will be a senior at DCE High School this fall, and will continue his job at East Bay.

The rest of the boys are preparing to return to school again. We’ll have boys at Wausau East, Horace Mann Middle School, Storefront Alternative School, and North Central Technical College. We’re looking forward to another busy and productive school year. It’s always good to get back and re-kindle school relationships, for students and staff alike.

August was a typically busy month, and afforded the boys some extra recreational time before the start of school. Staff member Joe Koenig files the following report on two such recent excursions:

Camping Trip of August 16-18.

On Friday August 16th the young men of Reynolds Group Home departed for a camping trip. The boys made camp at Council Grounds State Park outside Merrill, WI and began to set up camp with the assistance of staff members Joe and Sarah. Setting up tents was a chore, but afterward the boys went for a swim and then began to enjoy some fishing. As the tale goes, one resident lost a large fish and came back to the site with a story and a smile.

The group enjoyed an evening meal of burgers and brats cooked over an open fire. While the meal was delicious, one boy found the wire baskets used for cooking the brats could also cause a burn when touched! Other than that the evening went great.

Darwin arrived as the overnight staff, and found what would be a very interesting night. In the early morning hours the group was woken by thunderstorms that caused one of the tents to collapse and the other to fill with water. Everyone took shelter in the Big Blue Bus (van) for the remainder of the night.

Day Two started early with Darwin actually getting no sleep at all! Everyone was still anxious to continue north to Minocqua for a day of fun at the lake. We were met with a windy and overcast day, but no one let the weather deter them from waterskiing or taking turns being pulled on the kneeboard or tubes. One of the boys even to a shot at barefoot skiing! The boys have made a lot of progress in the waterskiing skills this summer, and showed it. They capped off that round of fun with another meal grilled over the fire by Joe and Darwin.

After lunch one of the boys requested some instruction in basic Scuba Diving technique, so the boys were all given a lesson in the fundamentals. Each boys had a turn at being attached to a staff member and trying a shallow dive. This method allowed the boys to experience the fun of Scuba Diving without the safety risk of diving without supervision. The staff person used the same air source and controlled the dive. One boy actually found a fishing jig that had become attached to a log. He worked it free and used it to "underwater fish", catching a bass with his newfound tackle. Others took up the underwater adventure and all found enjoyment in their newly acquired skill.

The evening brought yet another adventure with the boys going the St. Germaine area to enjoy a game of laser tag, and a fast trip around the Go-Kart track. One of the boys blew a tire on the track but got the Kart in for a quick exchange for a Kart with four good tires. The track was a challenge and the Karts were fast! The group then went for snacks and returned to the Council Grounds for the night.

Sunday morning was upon us all to quickly. Sarah rejoined the group to help pack up their gear and return to RGH. Many of the boys have shared with staff that a key to staying free of drugs and clear of problems has been due to staff guiding them into healthy recreational activity.

Rainbow Fall Trip of August 26

Through the generosity of donated admission tickets from the management of Rainbow Falls Water Park, the boys enjoyed a day of fun at the water park.

The group visited on a late summer day with the temperature in the 80’s and a bright clear blue sky. The boys had no complaints!

The boys spent the day on the water rides, wave pool, Go-Karts and finished off the day with a round of Mini-Golf. They also took time to enjoy the lunch they had brought with them. Everyone had a great time, and no one wanted the day to end. The group closed up the Park and returned home a little tired but happy.

Both trips seem to have brought out the best in our guys. They showed leadership and the ability to enjoy recreational activity as a group. They also demonstrated their ability to act appropriately in public. Good job guys!

Starting this month we’ll be featuring a Web Site of the Month that has proven to be useful to the staff and/or residents of MYS. If you have suggestions of sites, please forward them for mention, and inclusion on our web site (www.marathonyouthservices.org) links page.

This month I would recommend checking out the site for The Wisconsin Council on Children and Families. They can be found at www.wccf.org. Anyone with an interest in the needs and issues surrounding children and families will find useful information at this site. Certainly worthy of a bookmark and an occasional visit.

Their site is currently featuring a Question and Answer session with the candidates for Governor in the upcoming elections. Issues of great importance to kids and families are addressed. You’ll probably want to know where the candidates stand before casting your votes in the primary (September 10) and general (November 5) elections. Check it out!

With the hectic schedules brought on by early fall and return to the rigors of the school year, I thought the Recipe of the Month might address the need to prepare ahead of time for supper. Bringing the crock-pot out of summer storage seemed like a good idea. Let me suggest that those busy days can be much better if you can come home to this meal:

Bachelor’s Stew

Ingredients:

2 pounds lean beef chuck, trimmed and cut into 1 inch cubes
1/3 cup dried bread crumbs
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 yellow onion
3 carrots, cut into thick strips
3 carrots, cut into thick strips
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/3 cup quick-cooking tapioca
1 (4.5 ounce) can sliced mushrooms
1 teaspoon soy sauce
2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed tomato soup
1 cup beef broth

Directions:

Combine bread crumbs with salt and pepper and toss with beef. Place coated beef cubes into a slow cooker and add onion, carrots, celery, basil, tapioca, mushrooms, soy sauce, tomato soup and broth. Stir well, cover and cook on low for 10 to 12 hours, or on high for 3 to 5 hours.

This recipe produces 6 servings, 510 calories per serving. And it’s good!

Racing Season is coming to an end for another year. Our Director and Chief Driver Doug Adams has submitted the following summary:

A Bookend Racing Season

It was particularly exciting to have begun the 2002 MYS Racing Team season with a win of the very first race run at our local State Park Speedway. On this past Thursday, we also won the very last race to be run at this same track, which was an awesome way to wrap up the season.

(Hamburg’s #14 Amanda Schara and Wausau's #15 Doug Adams made up our front row in the Cenex Mini Stock Feature. Doug took off like a rocket as he had a 1-corner lead. Crossing the finish line first was Adams, second was Schofield's #17 Mike Merriam and third went to Mosinee's #9 Dale Louze.

We also came daringly close to accomplishing our ultimate goal of winning a season championship, mere points away from being awarded with 1st Place, so humbly going home with second in a field of almost 30 cars.

The 1st Place Team was deserving, with Brian Schmidt as driver, and several very competent young men in their 20’s to pit and assist in repairs. Brian not only had the team to beat, but a fast car to boot. But we are not complaining; with our teams of boys, offering frequent cheering support and minor repair and cosmetic assistance, and our 40ish senior driver, we are actually real proud of our accomplishments.

Overall, we earn a second place at State Park Speedway, a second place at Marshfield Super Speedway, and with two races to complete, we seem pretty secure with a third at Golden Sands Speedway in Plover. We are also bringing home a 9th Place overall by one of our youth drivers, my son Deven.

This was a huge season with over 40 races, which consumed on car, blew up a motor and cost us many struts and tires, not to mention lots of touch up paint.

We had two other drivers who also joined us on the track. Detective Bill Kolb of the Wausau Police Department comes out each year and does a great job of driving. We also saw the debut of my second son Derek, who at age 14 made a good showing on two different evenings of shows.

Several of the youth in our programs have been or are becoming directly involved in racing. Chris, a current boy at Reynolds Group Home is planning to build a car to drive next year. This will create a wonderful opportunity for his mother’s boyfriend and Chris to spend time and share experiences. Another youth we had worked with was offered attending the races as a reward for positive behavior at home.

Our goals were met. We involved our youth, we provided community involvement, we offered a positive activity substitute to drugs and gangs, we educated our youth on commitment, dedication, and teamwork. And we all had fun! Oh yeah, and did I mention…we won…a lot. We were the Division Champion for the second year, placing the cumulative highest at all three tracks!

We hope some of you saw us, or maybe come check us out in the United Way Parade coming up September 14th. We also have Staff Driving Day coming up soon…Do you feel the need for speed?

We again thank our community supporter including: Wausau Imports, 2510 Family Restaurant, Walters Buildings, Auto Select of Schofield, Wimmer Construction, Green Valley Septic, Hilltop Auto Wrecking, and of course all the great staff and youth of Marathon Youth Services, Inc. And a special thanks to my wife and two of my very special fans (and nieces), Alyssa and Haley Greene.
